Although the current situation is not encouraging, I hope that the information contained in the article will be useful in the future. The topic I would like to address is studying abroad and, more specifically, studying in China. However, I am not referring to studying as an exchange student. Today, I will talk about what steps from A to Z you need to take in order to apply to universities in China as a foreigner.

Studying in China - entrance examinations

Firstly, you need to take the general entrance exam to be accepted into the university. However, before this can be done, one must first familiarise oneself with the Chinese teaching system. For this, a student attends classes whose educational level is estimated to be at the secondary school (high school) level. Meanwhile, the foreigner assimilates the knowledge needed to obtain the High School Diploma. As a result of such classes, the difference between him and native students.

For the group of foreigners who want to enter China, universities such as Peking University, Renmin University, Fudan University and other prestigious units are required to hold entrance examinations and set the basic threshold. It is also important to note that the examinations for foreign students at Peking University are difficult, particularly in mathematics and English.  Moreover, according to data provided by The Beijing Bofei Overseas Chinese School of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, the difficulty level is higher than that of the national university entrance examinations. The difficulty is due more to the number of questions than the language itself, as this is relatively basic.

A shortcut? Bypassing the entrance exams

There is also an option without having to take the entrance exams. Universities in China accept students studying in the international education system or with scores from internationally recognised exams, including IB, SAT, AP, and other curriculum scores that meet certain standards. These individuals are then exempt from taking the written exams.  Since 2017, The Tsinghua University has applied the assessment exemption method for all international students. For other universities, it should be noted that the exemption is not without the threshold. Moreover, the threshold is higher and there are a number of uncertain factors that may weigh on an applicant’s admission to a particular university.

Universities in China - educational offerings and requirements for an applicant

If they wish to study at The Peking University, foreigners can apply for admission to a bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral programme. It is also possible to study in a part-time programme, as well as apply for advanced professional courses. Foreign students can apply for scholarships, special research and preparatory programmes and short-term training programmes. To apply for a degree programme, applicants must meet certain conditions.

They must not be Chinese citizens and must be at least 18 years old and have a valid passport. Besides, applicants should be in good health and maintain manners. Above all, they must abide by Chinese law and the university’s rules and regulations, as well as respect the culture and customs of the Chinese people.

In addition, passing the HSK 5 exam is the prerequisite; this confirms that the foreigner’s knowledge of the Chinese language is at a level that allows them to enter the Chinese university. Once a foreigner has passed the exam, he or she will receive the certificate as the proof of very good knowledge of the Chinese language.

Furthermore, depending on which degree programme you are applying for, universities in China will require different documentation from you:

  1. if you are applying for an undergraduate degree programme, you will need to provide the university with your Secondary School (High school) Diploma along with its official translation into English and Chinese.

2) If you are already a graduate, you must provide the university with the document stating what degree you have obtained, such as the Bachelor’s degree, or the certificate of two years’ work experience. Of course, these documents must also be translated into English and Chinese.

Once you have collected the necessary documentation, you should apply directly to the university where you wish to study. The international department of the given university  is responsible for processing our application.

Studying in China - entrance exam or language test

As already mentioned, a foreign applicant must foreign applicants must pass the entrance examinations. The general entrance exam is mainly dedicated to foreign students wishing to study in China. Applicants must acquire knowledge at the Chinese high school level. Only then can they take the exam. This type of selection is conducted at, among others, The Beijing University, The Renmin University, The Fudan University and other prestigious domestic universities.

How to take such an exam? There are two options. The first is to take the Chinese college entrance exam, which is mandatory for Chinese citizens. Then, through a formal admissions process, you can become a student at the Chinese university. The second option is to take advantage of the fact that you are a foreigner. Then you have to pass a language test and then go through the recruitment process successfully.  In this case, the language test is very important; the higher your score, the better your chances of getting into your dream university.

Universities in China - how does recruitment work?

Regardless of the general rules, each university is governed by its own internal rules, so the admissions process can vary from institution to institution. For example, what is the recruitment process like at The Fudan University? You need to provide the Certificate of Residence abroad for a minimum of 5 years, a copy of your passport, a copy of your High School diploma, your transcript and your HSK certificate (minimum HSK4). Once you have collected the documents, you should directly apply to the university.

Studying in China: summary

The enrolment processes I have described may vary slightly from university to university, but good knowledge of the Chinese language is undoubtedly the prerequisite.

The HSK certificate I mentioned above can be taken both in Poland and in China. Of course, I was not able to mention all the finer details of applying to Chinese universities in this article, as these depend mainly on the university and its rules. If anyone is interested in studying in China, I recommend checking the information on the official website of the given university . Below are links to the websites of The Peking University and The Fudan University.
