Judicial translation system in Italy

Italian sworn translator

The Italian sworn translator is a specially authorised person who has the legal authority to make official and sworn translations. These types of translations are necessary for many legal and official situations, such as contracts, notarial deeds, court documents or translations of birth, marriage or divorce certificates. A sworn translator must undergo special training,  have adequate qualifications and be approved by the relevant state authorities, such as The Ministry of Justice in Italy. Their translations have legal validity and are recognisable by public authorities and institutions. With their knowledge and authority, sworn translators play a key role in ensuring the reliability and intelligibility of Italian language documents in legal and official contexts.

Authorisation

Translation authentication in Italy is the process of confirming the authenticity and legality of sworn translations made by certified translators. It is an extremely important step in the official and legal context of documents that have been translated into Italian. The authentication procedure can be carried out by the sworn translator or by other competent authorities, such as courts or consular offices. During this process, the translation is signed and sealed and a sworn translator confirms the authenticity of the translation. Such a certified translation is recognisable as an official document and can be used in various official and legal procedures, such as applying for visas, obtaining citizenship or conducting business transactions.

Apostille in Italy

Legalisation

The legalisation of documents in Italy is the process that aims to confirm the authenticity and legality of documents issued in another country so that they are acceptable by Italian authorities and institutions. Italy is the signatory to The 1961 Hague Convention, which facilitates the process of legalisation of international documents. As a result, most documents from countries that are members of this Convention can be recognised in Italy without the need for a lengthy legalisation process.

The Apostille is the international certificate that is used under The Hague Convention to simplify the legalisation of documents. In the case of the apostille, the authority authorised to do so in the country that issued the document confirms its authenticity and then grants the apostille. Italy accepts the Apostille on documents, which means that documents was drawn up in The Hague Convention signatory country are recognisable in Italy without the need for additional legalisation formalities.

The request for the apostille can be made in the country where the document was issued, which greatly facilitates the international exchange of documents and their recognition in Italy. Thanks to this process, the legalisation of documents becomes more efficient and user-friendly, facilitating international transactions, studies, work and many other situations requiring legal documents.

Did you know that?

It is estimated that Italian is the mother tongue to some 60 million Europeans. This is due to the fact that it is not only the official language of Italy, but also of Switzerland, San Marino, the Vatican, the Istrian Zupani (in Croatia on the Istrian Peninsula) and Slovenian Istria (a peninsula of the northern Adriatic Sea). Italian is spoken by 90 million people worldwide.

Due to its distinctive accent, Italian is considered a melodic language. This is because the musical terms for speech tempo or dynamics, for example, originated in sunny Italy and are still used today. This was all thanks to Italian musicians of the Renaissance (as well as those of later years).

'ITALIANO' America?

Interestingly, the word 'America' is also associated with the Italian language. The traveller with Florentine roots, Amerigo Vespucci decided to explore the coasts of South America. In the course of his observations, he realised that the area could not belong to Asia, as another Italian sailor Christopher Columbus (Italian: Cristoforo Colombo) had previously assumed. A few years later, Vespucci was credited with the discovery of this part of the world, and the land have come to be referred to as America. The word is derived from the Latin equivalent of his name, Americus.
