Their role is crucial in the process of translating official documents, legal acts and other important texts. Sworn translators are accountable for guaranteeing the accuracy and faithfulness of the translation, which is to reflect the original text. To become a sworn translator in the Netherlands, a person must meet certain educational requirements and go through a rigorous examination process. After obtaining the appropriate qualifications, the translator is officially registered and has the right to authenticate translations through his seals and signatures. Thanks to this, their translations are considered official and final in the legal and overall context in the Netherlands.

Dutch or Netherlandish?

When we talk about the language used by Belgians and Dutch, the Dutch language is the correct name. It involves two varieties of Dutch language – northern and southern.

The name of the Dutch language officially refers to the northern Dutch variety used in the Netherlands, while the southern variety is used by inhabitants of the part of Belgium called Flanders. This variety is referred to as the Flemish language.

It is estimated that about 25 million people use the Dutch language, and about 5 million know Dutch as their second one.

In the Netherlands, it functions as an official language next to West Frisian language used in the FryslâN province.

Foreign languages in the Netherlands

A significant part of the Dutch also knows at least one foreign language. Learning English is compulsory, and 90% of the citizens of the Netherlands confirm the ability to speak English. However, this is not the only foreign language known by a large part of the Dutch – 70% knows German, and 29% speak French.

Looking at the differences, we can say that to practice the Dutch translator, knowledge of one of the Dutch dialects is enough.

If you are looking for a reliable Dutch translator, our translation agency offers the guarantee of translation quality.

Sworn translations in the Netherlands

Authorisation

1 Sworn translators in the Netherlands: In the Netherlands, sworn translators are qualified professionals with linguistic training and degree in linguistics who have received official state recognition to produce legal translations and is competent enough to translate for institutions. Their role is extremely important for official documents, court documents and other relevant legal documents.

2 Eligibility: In order to become a sworn translator in the Netherlands, a candidate must fulfill certain criteria. This usually includes obtaining the university degree in languages or translation and passing a special state exam. After passing this exam, the translator is enlisted on the official list of sworn translators.

3 Authentication of Documents: Sworn translators in the Netherlands are authorised to certify translations of documents. This means that their seal and signature on the document confirm that the translation is accurate and faithfully represents the content of the original. This guarantees the legality and reliability of the translations to be recognised by Dutch authorities. This is essential in the context of legalisation and the integrality of documents and their faithfulness to the original.

Apostille in the Netherlands

Legalisation

1 The Hague Convention: The Netherlands is also a signatory to The 1961 Hague Convention, which shortens the duration of the legalisation process of documents used in international transactions for procedures to be simplified. Thanks to this Convention, documents originating from Dutch can be legalised through the Apostille procedure.

2 Apostille procedure: the Apostille is a special seal which the original document is stamped with. In the Netherlands, the Apostille can be issued by The Ministry of Justice or other authorised institutions. This seal confirms the authenticity and reliability of the document, which is acceptable by all countries which have signed up The Hague Convention.

3 Formalities: To obtain the Apostille for a document in the Netherlands, it is necessary to apply to the relevant institution. This process requires sending of the original document and the payment of a fee. Then the document is stamped with the Apostille, making it legal and providing approval for use in other countries which have accepted the laws of The Hague Convention. This process facilitates the process of legalisation in the context of international transactions and in other cases.

The Hague Convention enables the exchange of documents between the Netherlands and other countries, eliminating the necessity of complex procedures as far as legalisation and recognition of documents are concerned.
