The History of Videogames

From beginnings to modernity

Computer games are one of the fastest growing branches of entertainment. Interestingly, the history of video games can be traced back to the 1950s, when the first interactive computer programmes were created, such as ‘Tennis for Two’ by Willim Higinbotham in 1958. ‘Tennis for Two’ is considered to be the first computer game by a creator in the history of video games. Although the game itself was very simple, it represented an important step in the development of computer games. A year later, in 1959, Alexander Sandy Douglas created ‘OXO’, a version of ‘Wheel and Cross’, which ran on the EDSAC computer, which was also important for the development of video games and laid the foundations for the first online games.

The beginning of computer games

However, it would be a shame not to mention ‘Tennis for Two’, whose creator was William Higinbotham. In 1972, the first modern console appeared, the Magnavox Odyssey, whose creator was Ralph Baer. Why did I use the word ‘modern’? Because the Magnavox Odyssey was the first cartridge-based console. It was the first console that allowed gamers to experience entertainment on a television screen. A year later for the Atari 2600 console in 1972, Atari released ‘Pong’, which proved to be the breakthrough in the world of computer games. ‘Pong’ became hugely popular and sparked the creation of the video game industry. Atari consoles were desirable by every gaming enthusiast in the 1970s and 1980s, becoming one of the first popular devices for playing computer games. The Atari 2600 console was replaced by the iconic Nintendo Entertainment System. However, Nintendo had the big competitor which was Sega Master System with the game ‘’Sonic the Hedgehog‘’.

One of the first games was ‘Spacewar!’(similar to it is ‘Asteroids’ ) the creator of the game was Steve Russell. The first electronic game was based on analogue technology and an oscilloscope. The first electronic game was very interesting, because the idea was to hit virtual targets with a manually controlled rocket trajectory mechanism. I think the following deserve a special mention: ‘Karateka’, ‘Pac-Man’, ‘Tetris’, ‘Jet Set Willy’, platform game ‘Prince’ , ‘Manic Miner’, ‘Zork’, ‘SimCity’, ‘Heart of Darkness’, ‘Homeworld’, ‘TIE Fighter’, ‘Alone in the Dark’, ‘Castle Wolfenstein’, ‘The Sims’, ‘The Last Express’, ‘Syberia’, ‘Grim Fandango’, ‘Another World’. These are classics that everyone should try.

Strategy games made their debut: Origins and an impact on the development of computer games

An extremely significant moment in the history of computer games was when strategy games such as ‘The Sumerian Game’ debuted. This was one of the first adaptations of resource management games and laid the foundations for future productions. The year 1964, when this game appeared on the market, marked the beginnings of the development of the genre that has gained immense popularity over the decades.

In the following years, strategy games debuted here which offered players the opportunity to plan their actions and long-term strategy. In the meantime, titles inspired by the genre were created, such as “Gears of War”, which, despite being primarily an action game, contains tactical elements. The series was successful in demonstrating the importance of planning and strategy mechanics.

It should not be forgotten that the development of computer games was also influenced by the first game adaptations, which introduced elements of management, tactics and planning. In the same vein, ‘Gears of War’ enriched the gameplay with cooperative mechanics, which are associated with turn-based strategy games that rely on cooperation and precision in action. Thanks to the fact that someone once created the first game in this genre, today’s titles draw on these inspirations, offering increasingly advanced mechanics.

Breakthroughs in the History of Computer Games: From the Beginning to the Modern Age

In the history of computer games, key moments include the introduction of groundbreaking consoles and games that have shaped the market over decades. The Fairchild Channel F, for example, was the first console with the ability to change games using cartridges, revolutionising the way games were played. Another milestone in the development of video games was the year of the PlayStation console, which dominated the market with games such as ‘Need for Speed’ and ‘Half-Life’, which became cornerstones of the development of action games. During this time, the first generation of consoles gained popularity, introducing the first interactive programmes that were the foundation for future titles such as ‘Mystery House’ or ‘King’s Quest’, which set new standards in the adventure game genre. In this context, it is worth mentioning platform games, which gained huge popularity thanks to classics such as ‘Tetris’, which became one of the most popular games of all time.

The 1990s, on the other hand, saw the emergence of the first online games, which opened a new chapter in the history of computer games. This gave rise to titles such as ‘Fallout’ and ‘TIE Fighter’, which dominated their respective genres and became a permanent part of the PC gaming canon. It is also worth mentioning games such as ‘Homeworld’, which introduced the revolution in the strategy game genre. ‘Shogun: Total War’ has become synonymous with the momentum of strategy games, offering players the opportunity to manage an entire civilisation. Nor can we forget indie games such as ‘Limbo’, which showed that independent developers can also create games that win the hearts of gamers around the world.

The turn of the century also saw the emergence of the first mobile games, such as ‘Angry Birds’, which dominated the mobile gaming market. These games have become an integral part of modern culture. The seventh generation of consoles was also the breakthrough in the history of gaming, with titles such as ‘Project Gotham Racing’, which offered extremely realistic racing, and the revolutionary ‘Fallout’, which redefined the RPG games. This period also saw the introduction of the text-based game genre, which developed in the 1970s and laid the foundations for future, more advanced productions.

Modern games such as ‘Syberia’ and ‘Limbo’ continue to draw on these early experiences, combining adventure game elements with modern developments. Titles such as ‘Fallout’ and ‘Need for Speed’ demonstrate the impact that changes in console and computer game technology have had on the industry as a whole. Productions such as ‘King’s Quest’ will long remain in history as foundations for the development of adventure games, which continue to evolve, creating new genres and mechanics, including the text-based game genre.

As successive generations of consoles introduced new technologies, from the first online games to games based on virtual reality, transformations in the history of the games console were inevitable. Over time, Ataria video games gave way to platform games such as ‘Mystery House’, which not only created interactive worlds, but also set the path for future productions. In this context, the development of the first online games and the emergence of the first mobile game laid the foundation for today’s VR and AR technologies, which allow for completely new experiences.

Games such as ‘Dragon’s Lair’ have become iconic, offering a modern form of interactive entertainment. Productions such as ‘Shogun: Total War’ and ‘TIE Fighter’ demonstrate the significant changes in the development of strategy games, which began to develop alongside  classic text-based games and the adventure game genre. The ability to create an interactive game with an elaborate storyline and unprecedented scale has become the basis for many contemporary titles. As can be seen, the history of computer games is not only about technology, but also about changes in the way we view interactivity and play.

The evolution of computer games: From classic adventure games to the latest technologies

In the early days of computer game development, the classic adventure game was one of the most important genres that attracted crowds of gamers. The classic adventure game ‘Zork’ gained popularity for its interactivity and text-based format, becoming the foundation in the history of gaming. This period of gaming was also accompanied by other titles such as ‘Dragon’s Lair’, which introduced the innovative laserdisc technology, providing players with a completely new visual experience. ‘SimCity’, on the other hand, became one of the most important titles that allowed players to create an interactive game that simulated city management. ‘SimCity’ opened the door to the future in which the interactive game created allowed players to be more deeply involved in decision-making processes.

Over the years, the first online games dominated the market, allowing players to connect in virtual worlds, which heralded the coming era of online gaming. The breakthrough came with the seventh generation of consoles, which novelised the games industry. Productions such as ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and ‘Deus Ex’ became the cornerstones offering a deep storyline and more expansive gameplay. ‘Deus Ex’ in particular set itself apart from other titles by introducing RPG elements to classic action, while ‘Baldur’s Gate’ attracted players with its advanced storyline and moral choices. The next step in this evolution was the first mobile game, which changed the way people viewed games – the first mobile game became an instant success due to its simplicity and accessibility on mobile devices.

At the same time, the most popular games began to dominate the charts, becoming part of mainstream culture. The most popular games such as ‘Tetris’ and ‘Pac-Man’ were available on Atari systems, which in turn pioneered Atari video games, offering gamers modern entertainment at the early stage of the industry’s development. Games such as ‘Defender of the Crown’ became further examples of innovative games that offered advanced graphics and strategic gameplay. Computer games were also accompanied by technological breakthroughs that changed the way video was viewed as an interactive art form.

All of these innovations had their roots in the text-based gaming genre, which formed the foundation of early computer games. However, it was the combination of text and graphics, as in the case of ‘Dragon’s Lair’, that spawned the new possibilities that today define the future of computer games. Throughout the years, ‘Baldur’s Gate’ and ‘Deus Ex’ have remained in gamers’ memories as examples that defined what a true computer game could be, offering not only entertainment but also a deep and interactive storyline.

Landmark Stages in the History of Games

Tetris’ (Russian), the First Generation of Consoles and the Development of the Adventure Games Genre

‘Tetris’ (Russian), which became hugely popular worldwide, was one of the most important developments in the history of computer games. ‘Tetris’ (Russian) became the symbol of the success of puzzle games and influenced the development of the video game industry, particularly in the context of the first generation of consoles. These early devices, such as the Atari, introduced the world of computer games to mass culture and laid the foundation for the future development of Atari video games. Then, in the context of console development, came the era of the seventh generation of consoles, which introduced completely new experiences and technologies.

The same era also saw titles that shaped the adventure game genre, such as ‘King’s Quest’, a game that defined what a king adventure game should be in the future. ‘King’s Quest’ not only transported players into interactive worlds full of puzzles, but also influenced the evolution of the entire adventure game genre. The history of the games console is also closely linked to these breakthroughs, which opened up video games to entirely new technological possibilities, enabling the development of more complex titles.

It is also worth noting that the days of the Nintendo console provided the foundation for many later games, including classic titles like ‘King’s Quest’, which set the standard for adventure games. In these days of momentum, the strategy game that was ‘Shogun: Total War’ defined the new type of game where players became masters of planning and decision-making in expansive worlds.

Rise in popularity: The development of video games

From the 1980s to the 1990s, there was a huge growth in video games. This period saw the development of titles such as ‘Half-Life’, which revolutionised action games and introduced narrative elements into computer games. The 1990s, on the other hand, saw the debut of multiplayer 3D games such as ‘Quake’ and ‘Counter-Strike’, which allowed players around the world to interact in virtual worlds. However, there are titles that are surprising in their originality, such as the genre game The ‘Neverhood’, where the entire animation is made of plasticine. ‘Doom’, being the pioneer of FPS games, showed how much of the role 3D graphics plays in video games, but a very similar title is ‘Wolfenstein 3D’. GTA IV, which debuted on the PlayStation 3, set new standards for storytelling in video games.

Similarly, ‘Halo 3’ has become one of the most important action game titles, offering a modern approach to multiplayer gameplay. The most compatible game I know of is ‘Galaxian’ can be played on Intellivision, Colecovision as well as Playstation 4. Compatibility brings in more customers. The game that has certainly increased the popularity of multiplayer games and video games is FIFA, including classic titles like ‘King’s Quest’ with 25 installations, which set the standard for adventure games. In these days of momentum, the strategy game that was’ Shogun: Total War’ defined the new type of game where players became masters of planning and decision-making in expansive worlds.

Also contributing to the growth in popularity of computer games was the game ‘Guitar Hero’, thanks to which people who loved music but did not know how to play the guitar could feel the satisfaction of playing their favourite songs. The development of video games also came about through ‘The Game Boy. ‘The Game Boy’ stood out for its long running time and great library of games. ‘The Game Boy’ is an important breakthrough because of its portability as well. With these qualities, ‘The Game Boy’ distinguished itself from its competitors.

New technologies: Successive generations of consoles

Over the years, successive generations of consoles introduced new technologies, changing the face of gaming. The PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360 dominated the market with revolutionary titles such as ‘Gran Turismo’ and ‘Need for Speed’, which brought a new quality to racing games. However, the real favourite is ‘Forza Motorsport’. ‘Forza Motorsport’ stands out from the competition with its beautiful graphics and laser-scanned tracks. It would be worthwhile to mention the Test Drive series of computer games. ‘Test Drive’ is the game that offers the huge open world. ‘Test Drive’ also features licensed car brands such as Ferrari and Aston Martin. The 2000s was also the time when racing games and multiplayer games became extremely popular. ‘Project Gotham Racing’ became one of the most important titles in this genre. This was also when games such as ‘L.A. Noire’ debuted, which surprised players with their narrative and introduced innovative pursuit and investigation mechanics. At this stage of game development, ‘Heavy Rain’ introduced a revolutionary way of storytelling, involving players in the emotional and moral choices of characters.

Groundbreaking technology: the Nintendo Switch

nintendo switch, który ma duże znaczene w całej historii gier komputerowych

Titles such as ‘Super Mario Bros’ and ‘Mario Bros’ were also becoming new icons of platform games, which mirrored the success of computer games over the years. The breakthrough technology is certainly the Nintendo Switch, which puts an innovative approach to entertainment with the so-called Joy-Cons on the Nintendo Switch. These are controllers that can be used together as well as separately. On the other hand, when you look at the Nintendo 3DS and think that it was presented at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2010 and 6 years later the Nintendo Switch is presented with a completely newer design and features, you can see with the naked eye the pace at which the console market is developing.

Contemporary games: From mobile games to AAA

Today’s gaming market is no longer just about consoles, but also about mobile games, which have gained huge popularity. ‘FarmVille’ and ‘Angry Birds’ have become phenomena around the world, proving that mobile games can be both engaging and entertaining. ‘Minecraft’ came to symbolise the new era of gaming, offering players the open world in which they could create their own virtual environments. Indie games such as ‘Braid’ and ‘Limbo’, also began to gain popularity, offering a unique approach to gameplay. This period also saw the emergence of multiplayer 3D games, which allowed players around the world to compete and collaborate. Steam became one of the most important platforms for the digital distribution of games, as well as the place where popular Indie games debuted.

On Steam, we can also play the adventure game series ‘The Legend of Zelda’. ‘The Legend of Zelda’ is distinguished by its exploration and puzzles. In today’s world, there is a very popular modification of the computer game. It consists of interfering with the world created by the publisher. Modification of a computer game is very visible in games such as : ‘Minecraft’, ‘Garry’s mod’. Many modern games are free-to-play. What does this mean? It means, as the name suggests, that they are free of charge. However, free-to-play games mostly have a little catch: either they have a lot of micropayments or there are a lot of cheats in online games, which make the gameplay less enjoyable. An exemplary free-to-play game is ‘Fortnite’. Platforms that allow players to purchase games online include Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/ and Epic Games: https://store.epicgames.com/en-US/.

Contemporary role-playing and narrative games

The first role-playing game was ‘Akalabeth’, which was very simple and easy to play; however, in modern games it is also important to have a good storyline in order to draw the user into the virtual world. Such popularity was gained by role-playing games such as ‘Fallout’ series, ‘Silent Hill’, ‘Red Dead Redemption’, ‘Resident Evil series’, ‘Call of Duty’. It is also worth mentioning our Polish productions, such as ‘The Witcher’ or ‘Cyberpunk’. At the same time, the AAA games market saw productions such as ‘God of War’, which set new standards for action games. ‘Heavy Rain’, a computer game by ‘Quantic Dream’, surprised players with its narrative and decisions influencing the storyline. New technologies such as VR (virtual reality) began to gain popularity, enabling players to have completely new experiences in virtual worlds. ‘GTA IV’ and ‘L.A. Noire’, on the other hand, showed how far computer games have come in terms of realism and narrative. An interesting video game worth mentioning is the ‘Gabriel Knight’ series of adventure games, as there is a fascinating storyline and an interesting world. And everything is realised in a dark soulful atmosphere. A great role-playing video game that sticks in my memory is ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’, although I played it when I was still a child, I remember the story very well. What is interesting, ‘Five Nights at Freddy’s’ has been adapted to film, which also shows how rich the game’s plot is, but also hidden. The game I would like to draw your attention to is the ‘Metal Gear Solid’ series of games. This game has an advanced storyline and touches on many serious topics such as human rights, war. Especially I recommend ‘Metal Gear Solid 4’, because it has groundbreaking graphics and a storyline. If you are a fan of soulful atmospheres, ‘Demon’s Souls’ will certainly be a good position. ‘Demon’s Souls’ offers challenging but rewarding entertainment. The popularity that role-playing games have gained is primarily due to their ability to engage players through elaborate narratives, the ability to make decisions that affect the course of the story and deep immersion into the created world, where players can personalise their characters and play a variety of roles according to their own preferences.

The future of computer games: New technologies and experiences

The success of gaming will be linked to further developments in technology. We can already see how the development of VR technology and mobile games is influencing the way players experience virtual worlds. Titles such as Stalker 2, which debuted on 20 November 2024, transport us into post-apocalyptic worlds, offering amazing graphics and the realistic experience.

It is also worth mentioning that ‘Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl’ is the first game to use the A-life system, in which NPCs (Non Playable Character) live their own lives. Games such as Second Life and Battle.net are becoming platforms for new online experiences, introducing social and collaborative online elements. The computer gaming industry today is already extremely developed, especially this industry is enjoying the popularity of multiplayer games. It is worth mentioning that the game was one of the first of its kind –  ‘Final Fantasy XI’. People who are not in the subject may think that this is some kind of gaming academy, nothing could be further from the truth !

For a game to be suitable for esports it must be a real-time game. What is a real-time game? It is the game in which the player has no pauses and the player has to react to the events on screen immediately, such as ‘CS 2’ (former CS:GO), ‘League of Legends’, ‘Iracing’. Real-time gaming is hard and it takes hundreds if not thousands of hours to master it to near perfection, which is what makes e-sport such an interesting phenomenon. The computer games industry is constantly evolving and is becoming such a serious phenomenon that some simulations are used, for example to simulate aviation on which future pilots train or rally drivers in rally simulations such as the exemplary game of the genre ‘Richard Burns Rally’, which is used by a large number of users. The popularity of racing games is mainly based on the extent to which the game is realistic and how the vehicle behaves in various conditions, so if such games are played by professionals, their popularity automatically increases. In this respect, the success of computer games is very evident. The popularity of video games has opened up new opportunities for many people.

Impact of turn-based strategy games and MMORPG

It is also worth noting how important the turn-based game ‘Civilization’ or ‘Ultima’ were for the development of subsequent computer games, which gave rise to MMORPG and other complex online strategy games. The first strategy game to emerge on the market was ‘The Sumerian Game’, which was text-based and involved managing resources and armies.

The first strategy game was text-based and was developed in 1964.The MMORPG market gave rise to titles such as ‘World of Warcraft’, which dominated the market and became hugely popular, creating virtual communities that still exist today. Subsequent MMO game systems combined with virtual reality could significantly influence the future of gaming, allowing players to have a more immersive experience in virtual worlds. The first strategy game I played was ‘Hearts of Iron IV’, a game that contributed a lot to the world of strategy by introducing a new diplomacy system or a very realistic logistics system.

Summary

Computer games have come a long way, from the simple experimental games of the 1950s to the complex and technologically advanced productions of today. Technological transformations, such as the introduction of VR, mobile gaming, as well as the development of social gaming, have changed the way players interact with computer games. The future of gaming seems is full of exciting new technologies that will shape the player experience for decades to come.
